How do you make a sphere in Minecraft?

Build it as a stack of flat circles. Start with layer 1 at the bottom and place the blocks the grid shows. Move the slider up one step and build the next layer on top. Repeat until the last layer. Each layer is a circle that grows toward the middle and shrinks after it.

The gray squares show the layer below. Line up your new layer with the blocks you just placed, and the curve will stay smooth. Hover over a square to see how far it is from the center line.

How to use this sphere guide

      1. Type the diameter, the width of the ball in blocks.
      2. Choose hollow for a shell or filled for a solid ball.
      3. Drag the layer slider, or use the up and down buttons.
      4. Read the rows list under the grid for the exact columns in each row.
      5. Click blocks as you place them. Each layer keeps its own marks in this browser.

      How the blocks are chosen

The tool treats every block as a small cube with a center point. A block is part of the ball when that center sits inside a sphere of your diameter. For a hollow shell, the tool keeps only the blocks that touch an empty space on one of their six faces.

      Keep block if (dx ÷ r)² + (dy ÷ r)² + (dz ÷ r)² ≤ 1, where r = diameter ÷ 2

Here dx, dy and dz are the distances from the center of the block to the center of the ball. Because the rule only uses distance, the result is the same from every side. Our tests check that the top half mirrors the bottom half and that the middle layer of an odd sphere matches a filled circle of the same size.

A hollow shell is much cheaper than a solid ball. At 51 blocks wide, the shell uses about one tenth of the blocks. One stack holds 64 of most blocks, so divide the total by 64 to plan your stacks.

      FAQ

How many layers does a sphere have?

A sphere has as many layers as its diameter. A 21 block sphere has 21 layers, from layer 1 at the bottom to layer 21 at the top. The top and bottom layers match, and so do each pair of layers the same distance from the middle.

How many blocks do I need for a hollow sphere?

It grows with the square of the size. A 21 wide hollow sphere needs 1,082 blocks, and a 51 wide one needs 6,642. The total for your size is shown above the grid.

Will a hollow sphere have holes?

No. A block stays in the shell if it touches empty space on any of its six faces. That closes every gap, so the shell is airtight. You can fill it with water or use it as a sealed base.

Can I print a sphere blueprint?

Yes. Pick a layer and press Print or Save PNG. Each layer prints as its own grid with the row list under it. Do this for each layer you need, or keep the page open on a second screen while you build.

What is the biggest sphere I can build?

This tool goes up to 512 blocks wide. In the game, the height limit matters more. The Minecraft Wiki lists the Overworld build limits as Y = -64 and Y = 320, a space 384 blocks tall, so a bigger sphere will not fit.
